Environmental Metrics Reporting

Steelcase provides customers with Environmental Metrics Reporting that measures the environmental aspects of Steelcase products. Using past purchases or proposed product mixes, data provided can be used to support your environmental goals and analyze potential contributions to LEED, IAQ, BIFMA e3 level, and Cradle to Cradle.

Responsible Furniture Disposal

If you have office furniture that you no longer want or need, Red Thread can help.

Our Phase 2 Program consultants can evaluate your furniture inventory and offer options for reuse, all with a “zero landfill” goal. The intent is for these used products to be placed back into service for reuse with other organizations, or because of age and condition of the used products, be recycled into new usable products. There are many options from which to choose with social, environmental, and economic benefits.

Technology Recycling

We work to maintain a zero-landfill policy for technology.

Our recycling center manages end-of-life services for customer technology products.

95% of the products were e-waste, that would have ended up in a landfill. We partner with a certified e-waste handler to break these items down and recycle them as steel/circuit boards/plastics and then put into the recycled product stream. The remaining 5% is sold into a secondary market for reuse.

  • 240,000 lbs end-of-life technology recycled (2023)

Our Facilities & Operations

Recycling

Actively engage in responsible recycling in our sales offices and operations centers:

  • 290,000 lbs of metal recycled (2023)
  • 95,400 cubic feet of compacted cardboard recycled (2023)
  • 1,980 wood pallets recycled (2023)

Utilities

Daylight harvesting lighting systems dim lighting based on ambient lighting levels and occupancy sensors ensure lighting is only utilized when spaces are occupied.

  • 20% energy savings company-wide through our lighting systems

LEED Certified

The Steelcase Boston WorkLife and Red Thread Headquarters at 101 Seaport Boulevard is LEED Platinum certified.
